An archaeological survey was first conducted in 2013 in the vicinity of the Vaigai river from Theni district to Ramanathapuram district where the river meets the sea. During the study, 293 sites, including Keeladi, were identified to have archaeological residues. The first three phases of excavation at Keeladi were conducted by the Archaeological Survey of India while the fourth and fifth phases were conducted by the Tamil Nadu Archaeology Department. The fifth phase of excavation is to be completed by September 30,2019.And K.Pandiayarajan minister of Tamil Nadu has confirmed that a sum of 15 crores will be allocated to construct a museum for preserving the excavations.
